Yes,
Bisexuality is a Thing
There
are a lot of people who do not think bisexuality is a ‘thing’. The thought of
being attracted to both men and women is not fathomable. The argument many
people will make is: if someone is attracted to their sex at all then that
makes them gay. There is a huge difference between being gay and bisexual; the
prefix of bisexual is “bi” for a reason.
A
study was conducted in 2011 from Northwestern University on bisexuality to
search for proof that it exists. Researchers gathered one hundred men with
varied sexualities (straight, bisexual and gay) and were monitored for sexual
arousal while watching videos involving intimacy. http://theweek.com/article/index/218507/the-insulting-study-that-proves-bisexuality-is-real
The results showed that men who were bisexual were aroused by both videos of
men and women.
Many
people have described this study as demeaning and dehumanizing because of what
the study contained. Jim Larsen of the Bisexual Organizing Project stated,
“They’re proving what we in the community already know…it’s insulting”. Others
argue this study and others like it “reduces sexuality and relationships to
just sexual stimulation” as said by Ellyn Ruthstrom of the Bisexual Resource
Center.
This
study, regardless of whether it is demeaning or not, does in fact prove that
bisexuality is real. Only men were tested but if they are capable of being attracted
to both sexes, women are as well. I think this case study was very helpful
because it’s an eye-opener. Everyone has their own views on sexuality however
it’s important that people recognize that bisexuality is very much a real
phenomenon. You don’t have to agree with it, but acknowledge it. People can be
attracted to both men and women and that’s okay, it’s becoming a social norm
now. Yes, bisexuality is a thing.
